Therefore, the exchange of parasites from wild to domestic carnivores and vice versa have enhanced the public health relevance of wild carnivores and their potential impact in the epidemiology of many zoonotic parasitic diseases. Certainly, these represent only a tiny fraction of the roughly 1,000 known varieties of plants that supplement energy from the soil and sun with that derived from the consumption of flesh, to be sure. I had a lot of fun playing the many little games people had made from the Carnivores games, and out of all of them my favorite had to have been Carnivores: Far North. The risk of transmission of zoonotic nematodes from wild carnivores to humans via food, water and soil (e.g., genera Ancylostoma, Baylisascaris, Capillaria, Uncinaria, Strongyloides, Toxocara, Trichinella) or arthropod vectors (e.g., genera Dirofilaria spp., Onchocerca spp., Thelazia spp.) and the emergence, re-emergence or the decreasing trend of selected infections is herein discussed. It was such a great reimagining of the Ice Age games, which in my own personal opinion had been a bit lackluster, but that’s just my own opinion. Instead, high densities of predators such as Brown Bears, Wolverines and Wolves, find a place to live and roam freely. In addition, the reasons for limited scientific information about some parasites of zoonotic concern have been examined. Especially near Kuhmo, not far from the Russian border, the Finnish no man’s land is devoid of humans. Some 1340km long, it runs mostly through uninhabited taiga forests and sparsely populated rural areas. This no man’s land is roughly the north/south international border between Finland and the Russian Federation. More over, it is such a privilege to be present in Finland’s wild ‘no man’s land. It makes the hide sessions always something to look forward too. Despite, having this experience, the set up is never the same as to who and when will perform on the taiga stage. After a decade of guiding these type of tours in Finland, EB5 founder Jan knows several bears, wolves and wolverines by (nick)name, physical performance and behaviour. Given the presence of wolves, bears and wolverines near the hides, it’s always a pleasure observing these large carnivores in an unique way. ![]() A unique setting in Finland’s wild ‘no man’s land ![]()
